An important component to the success of any Thinking Huts Project will be a Local Volunteer Leader who can assist in site selection and oversee the assembly of the Hut for use in the local community.
A Local Volunteer Leader must have the following characteristics
- Be a member of the community where the Hut will be placed
- Thinking Huts is an enabling program with the aim to provide the facilities and requisite support to allow the local community to secure and utilize the educational infrastructure. The day-to-day and ongoing support must come from the local community for any successful outcome. The local community is the primary benefactor of the output from the Thinking Huts project and as such should be intimately involved in as many ways as possible. Thinking Huts may assist in obtaining educational resources such as learning materials and potential short-term teacher volunteers but the ongoing support must be managed locally. Key to that community involvement is a person responsible on the ground that is a member of that local community and committed to remain in that community for the duration of the successful assembly, set-up and commencement of the Hut. Thinking Huts strongly believes that a local member of the community will know best what needs that community may have and can garner local support that is difficult to secure from a distance. The local community lead volunteer would be in close communication with the staff of Thinking Huts to relay concerns, address issues and coordinate efforts.
- Have an active interest in the value of education
- The Local Volunteer Leader must have an interest in supporting education and be supportive of the education offering geared toward functional literacy, key mathematical skills, critical thinking, scientific methodology and other areas that will make the students competent and competitive for additional studies in advanced education. Thinking Huts intention is to be a short-term solution to an immediate lack of facilities. Time is of the essence in education and missing any significant amount of time in the early formative years a child's live is an extremely difficult problem to overcome. Early formative learning is key to advanced studies. Sometimes the best asset any community has is the future contributions of its youngest members.
- Be trustworthy and reliable
- The project involves assets of significant value accompanying a time-line that will be aggressive with several key milestones. The Local Volunteer Leader will need to commit to secure those assets and maintain the security of the materials through the assembly so that the Huts can be correctly and functionally assembled for use. The time-line will require that the Local Volunteer Leader be present at certain key events and reachable via phone/email/text during the project of assembling and commencing the usage of the Hut.
- Have the ability to understand and follow directions for assembling of the Hut
- A reasonable grasp of the English language will be required as most of the Thinking Huts staff use English as their first language and most of the documentation and instructions are written in English. Understanding basic instructions on how to assemble the Huts will be important. Clear instructions will be provided on how to fit the components together. Great effort will be made to design the components that they can only be assembled in only one way to minimize assembly errors. Components will be clearly marked with annotations to make sure that abutting components are matched and connected. A small number of tools will be provided to support the assembly of bolts, washers and nuts used in fastening certain components. There will be no need to cut any of the materials as the Huts will be test assembled by Thinking Huts prior to shipment and the components will be made from seasoned or manufactured materials that allow little to no fluctuations in size during shipment or environmental variances.
- Shows team leadership skills
- A small team will be required as certain components and the assembly will require more than a single pair of hands. The Local Volunteer Leader should be able to gather a small team to help in the assembly of the Hut. Leadership skills will be important to direct the team in the assembly to insure that the assembly is correct, secure and stable prior to use. The volunteer team members need no special skills other than the ability to follow directives from the Local Volunteer Leader. The project of assembling a Hut is envisioned and engineered to be a short duration effort. Commitment of the team members should be less than a week to complete the assembly.
To assure that the Local Volunteer Leader meets the basic requirements Thinking Huts requires that the candidate submit three references from respected member of the local community who can verify that the Local Volunteer Leader candidate meets the basic requirements as defined above.
